God has also chosen to disclose Himself to people throughout the Bible

Have you heard the story of a kindergarten teacher who told everyone to draw a picture of what was important to them? In the back of the room a boy began to work on his drawing. Everybody else finished and handed in their picture, but he didn’t. He was still drawing. The teacher graciously walked back and put her arm around the boy’s shoulder and asked

what he was drawing. He didn’t look up; he just kept on working feverishly at his picture. He said he was drawing God. The teacher a little shocked said that no one knows what God looks like. The little boy replied that they will when he is done.

How does God reveal himself to us? The Psalmist says in chapter 19 that “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. 2 Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. 3 They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. 4 Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.” The Apostle Paul seems to reverberate these words in Romans 1 and declares that no one has an excuse not to know about God. He says, “19They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

But God has also chosen to disclose Himself to people throughout the Bible. Revealing who He is in different and unique ways. Here are just a few examples:

As one walking in the garden of Eden ………………………………………….… Genesis 3:8

A voice of judgement and hope to Noah …………………………………………. Genesis 6

As a burning bush that didn’t burn to Moses ……………………………..……  Exodus 3

As a still small voice to Elijah ……………………………………………..……………1 Kings 17

In a vision of holiness and majesty to Isaiah ……………………………..………   Isaiah 6

In the person and ministry of Jesus Christ ……………………………….…………Gospels

The Scriptures are the greatest source of knowledge to knowing God and the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself and His purposes throughout history. Jesus Himself taught that the Scriptures reveal who He is (Luke 24:27, 44-45; John 5:39). The Bible presents us with eyewitness testimony of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:16-19). From beginning to end, from Genesis to Revelation, Scripture is God’s revelation of Himself to whoever will read it and understand.

Many people can acknowledge the fact that there is a God. But God wants us to know Him intimately—to spend all eternity in close fellowship with Him. The reference in Genesis chapter three has always stirred my heart. It would appear from the wording that this was a normal event before sin entered the human race. Therefore, a reflection on the type of relationship God had with His creation and the relationship we were created for. Christ’s work upon the cross has made the way to restore that closeness with the Almighty. The way is open, all we need to do is to humbly draw near through the sacrifice of Christ.

The invitation is given to all. The way to know God is made clear through Christ and now it’s up to us to take the time to know God through His Word and in His presence. At times to be still and listen. At times to speak, ask, worship and sense His mighty presence in our lives. If you are not yet reading a Bible schedule, can I suggest reading one of the gospels this summer? The book of Romans is also a powerful book revealing much about God and our relationship with Him. Take some time with God and see what He wants to reveal to you about who He is.
