Am I eligible?

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) volunteers prepare income tax and benefit returns for individuals with low to modest income and a simple tax situation. These can include:

  • Social assistance recipients;
  • Newcomers to Canada;
  • Seniors; and
  • Students

To determine a taxpayer’s eligibility, use the income levels shown below as a guideline.

Taxpayer Status Maximum Family Income
Single person up to $35,000
Couple up to $45,000

For each additional dependent add $2,500 to the family income.

The taxpayer should not have interest income of more than $1,000. Volunteers will not prepare complex returns, such as returns for individuals who:

  • Have self-employment income;
  • Have business or rental income and expenses;
  • Have capital gains or losses;
  • Have employment expenses;
  • File for bankruptcy; or
  • Deceased in the year.
